Specialized,
Individualized Consulting
|
Specialized, individualized consulting is available for the evaluation of cognitive functioning, behavior management/support, activity development, placement decisions, and issues of family adjustment. Specialists are experienced in the development of positive interventions that improve quality of life. One goal of A.I.D. is to develop concepts, tools and terminology to bridge the many different needs of people with cognitive impairments. Dementia, for example, is really a cognitive disorder but it involves a number of disciplines such as psychiatry, neurology, psychology and the various fields of therapy. In the past, it was felt that little could be done to help victims with disorders that cause dementia; professionals in these fields struggled to provide for basic needs.
Today,
however, research into the cognitive issues that involve dementia have revealed
that it is possible to improve the quality of life for individuals with Alzheimers
Dementia by using preserved specific cognitive factors that differ for each
diagnosis. For example, in Alzheimers Disease, we know that Explicit
Memory, (conscious recollection of information, facts, dates, items) is destroyed.
Implicit Memory, however, a more automatic and procedural form of memory,
is retained long into the disease progression. Therefore, Implicit Memory
can be utilized to develop positive behavioral interventions to enable caregivers
to continue to provide care in the home and reduce their burnout, or delay
the need to place an individual in a residential facility of some sort.
Specific and Individualized Activity Development is often helpful in providing
quality of life for people with cognitive impairments due to various disorders.
Everyone has a preferred learning modality, or a particular sense that when
employed, facilitates their best learning. Particularly rich sensory activities
can then be developed for that individual to provide cognitive stimulation
and engagement, even for those in the latter, more severe stages of the disorder.
