Engaging Activities in Longterm Care 30 Hour Correspondence Course
Approved for 30 Hours of Continuing Education Credits by the National Certification Council of Activity Professionals for Activity Professionals

Section One introduces the student to brain development in humans, an overview of Alzheimer's Disease, and how humans learn. The assignment for this section is to assess the preferred learning modality of some of your residents. All instructions, assessments and scoring guides are included.

In Section Two, elements for activity development are discussed and activities for individuals with mild to moderate levels of dementia are introduced. These include word games, discussion groups, scavenger hunts, exercise, music, television, matching activities and the Montessori approach to learning. The assignment for this section is to develop an activity schedule for several of your residents.

Section Three addresses activities for individuals with severe to profound levels of dementia and introduces students to the elements of multi-sensory activities, aka "Snoezelen". Students are taught to develop activities that address each sense modality, i.e., gustatory, olfactory, visual, auditory and tactile. The assignment for this section is to develop multi-sensory activities for several of your residents.

Section Four addresses activity development for anyone by using complementary therapies and enhancing the dining experience and the assignment for this section is to construct several programmed activities using them.

All students must validate their 30 hour time commitment by completing a Time Tally Sheet. Once all is completed, students mail in their assignments and time tally sheets to A.I.D. Training. These are then reviewed and a certificate is mailed out to the student by the next day's mail promptly, providing everything is appropriately completed and documented.
